Battle Ground teams bow out at district

Battle Ground High School’s boys and girls basketball teams both saw their seasons come to an end on the same night at the Class 4A district tournament.

Each Tigers’ team reached the final game of the district tournament, playing for second place in the tourney, which would give the winning team the district’s final seed into the round of 16 teams.

Battle Ground’s boys lost 60-50 to Camas, despite the efforts of Nate Moring (15 points) and Devin Johnson (12 points). The two also led the Tigers to a 71-68 win over Evergreen on Thursday, a game in which Moring had 24 points and Johnson chipped in 15. Andrej Besara and Rennie Mendoza also had 12 points in the win over Evergreen.

Jossilyn Blackman scored 13 points, Emily Griffith had 10 and Emily Russell added nine as the Battle Ground girls defeated Union 64-56 to advance to the game for second place. The Tigers then lost to Camas 51-48 on Friday. Blackman had 24 points in the loss to the Papermakers and Griffith added 13.

Prairie boys

The Prairie boys saw their season come to an end with a 46-44 double-overtime loss to Peninsula in a game played Thursday in the Class 3A bi-district tournament at Clover Park High School.

The Falcons, which finished the season with a 10-15 overall record, fell behind 12-2 in the first quarter but battle back to force the two overtimes. Forward Greg Bernash continued his standout play for Prairie, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the loss.

Woodland boys

Woodland failed in its bid to advance to the regional (16 teams) round of the Class 2A boys basketball tournament due to a 55-50 loss to Centralia in a game played Saturday in Longview.

The Beavers were led by Ryan Sturdivan, who had 16 points, 12 coming off four 3-pointers.

Woodland advanced to the Saturday game with a 65-55 win over Aberdeen in game played Thursday in Longview. Tanner Sixberry’s 14 points led the Beavers in that game. Tanner Froeber added 13 points, Jake Rosenbalm had 11, Troy Flanagan added nine and Sturdivan chipped in eight.

Hockinson girls



Black Hills scored the game-winning field goal in the final seconds to end Hockinson’s hopes to advance to the round of 16 teams in the Class 2A district tournament. The Hawks lost 45-43 in the game played Saturday at Centralia.

Sydnie Cole-Vogler had 10 points to lead Hockinson, which also got nine points each from Hannah Neibauer and Payton Wangler.

Hockinson finished ninth as a team at the Class 2A boys state meet held Feb. 20-21 in Federal Way.

Hockinson’s Dylan Osborne finished third in the 50 freestyle (21.53) and third in the 100 butterfly (51.79).

Jonah Rodewald had a pair of fourth-place finishes for Hockinson. Rodewald was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.66) and fourth in the 200 individual medley (1:58.80).

William Morris was 15th in the 200 freestyle (1:57.83) and 16th in the 500 freestyle (5:15.13).

Evan Oja joined Rodewald, Osborne and Morris to finish in the top eight in two relays. The Hawks finished sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:49.89) and eighth in the 400 free relay (3:24.23).

Ridgefield gymnastics

Ridgefield’s Kylee Tjensvold placed in two individual events at the Class 2A state gymnastics meet held Feb. 20-21 at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.

Tjensvold was fifth in the uneven bars (9.25) and she tied for ninth in the balance beam (9.15).
