The Ridgefield and Woodland softball teams met early last week while the sun was shining, and the Spudders went on a 16-0 tear to defeat the Beavers, Tuesday, April 23.

The Spudders rolled into this week tied for first in the 2A Greater St. Helens League with a league standing of 11-1, equal to the Mark Morris Monarchs.

As of Monday, the Beavers maintained their spot at fourth in the league ahead of their matchup with the Hockinson Hawks who sit at fifth. The game was slated to take place Tuesday, April 30, with results not available before press time.

In the 16-0 win by the Spudders, Charlie Harris and Ashlynn Bredemeyer hit home runs in the top of the second inning to propel Ridgefield to a 9-0 lead.

“We’re usually a pretty well-rounded team when it comes to one through nine, and our bottom of the lineup stage really exploded on the ball that they were seeing,” Ridgefield head coach Kelsey Anchors said.

The Beavers’ 16-0 loss has head coach Tom Christensen hoping it doesn’t knock his team off track as they’re looking toward accomplishments beyond the regular season.

“Yeah, we’re in fourth, but we’re hoping to get to state. So we’re hoping to be a state-caliber team,” he said. “We just need to learn from a loss like that, and there’s things that we can do better and keep moving forward.”

On Monday, April 29, Woodland were slated to finish their series with the Mark Morris Monarchs, but results were unavailable before press time. The Beavers are next scheduled to play against Hudson’s Bay High School at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 2, on the road.

The Spudders are slated to play against Washougal High School at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, at home, and at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 2, at Fort Vancouver High School.
