Battle Ground Tigers land second in league after 6-3 loss

The Tigers baseball squad controlled its own destiny entering its final league game on Friday, 26, but lost 6-3 to Union, landing in second in the 4A Greater St. Helens League.

Battle Ground entered the week with senior night against Prairie High School, but results were unavailable at press time.

Up next for the Tigers: bi-districts, and head coach Seth Johnson has high praise for the South Puget Sound League (SPSL) that the Tigers will face. Camas High School and Skyview High School advanced to the bi-district round, as well, with Camas earning first in the 4A GSHL.

“They’re the toughest league in the state,” he said. “We’ll be playing an eight seed within their league, but that eight seed could probably win our league. So it will be a tough game, regardless.”

The loser-out matchup with the SPSL’s No. 8 seed is slated for May 7, with time and location to be determined.

Tiger sophomore ace James Gill will get the nod for the bi-district matchup on May 7.

“James will get the ball that first day, and it’s about him being aggressive and attacking and challenging those guys,” Johnson said. “The team we play against, they’re going to have faced six to seven Division-I arms already this year from within that league. So, they’re already going to have seen pitchers that have really good stuff, similar to James.”

Johnson said the defense and Gill will have to minimize giving up walks and errors in the bi-district round. If the Tigers win, they advance to another loser-out game slated for May 8.
