Columbia Theater brings The Sound of Music back to Clark County

Musical theater patrons have the chance to watch Columbia Theater Arts Foundation reprise their production of The Sound of Music for the last two weekends of September.

Last year, the nonprofit organization put on this same performance as its first ever production, selling out the seats to every show during its run.

“We did this back in 2025, and it was such an incredible production that we thought we should do it again,” said

Megan Douglas, production manager for the show.
This year, rehearsals for the September shows began as early as July 29.

“We’ve worked tirelessly, our orchestra has been working so incredibly hard, and now we’re at the point where we’re merging our vocal and orchestra together,” Douglas said.

Columbia Theater’s productions, while featuring grand set pieces and performers, also feature a live orchestra sourced directly from the Clark County area.

Because the company is still in its early stages, the performers don’t have a home space, something that even long running local companies have struggled with themselves.

“We don’t have a home theater, so we have to find rehearsal space, source props, source sets, everything we build from the ground up,” Douglas said.

Though the company has only been active for about a year, Douglas cites that the skill with which the shows are produced is what got her involved just three months ago.

“What drew me to the company is quality theater performances for everyone,” Douglas said. “I have really found my home here. I love everybody in it and we have so much fun together.”

During her childhood, she visited Keller Auditorium and saw a production of The Lion King, an experience she says blew her mind.

“To be a part of a big production like this makes young me really proud and excited,” Douglas said.

While The Sound of Music story has existed for a while and been acted out on stages and screens, Douglas put forward that the reason this show should draw an audience is because it’s for this specific community.

“We support our community. We have foster kids in our community that are a part of our cast,” she said. “We have people in our crew that really love and need our support, and that’s why we’re here, for building community.”

According to her, Columbia Theater is a type of community that hasn’t been present in the Clark County area until recently.

“We’re really unique in the fact that everyone is truly welcome, come with what you are, who you are,” Douglas said. “We really believe that the stage is for everybody, the audience from all walks of life, the crew, the actors, every part of it is from everywhere.”
