Area athletes excel at Tiger Invite

BATTLE GROUND – Track and field athletes from five area high schools were among the 19 teams represented at the 2015 Tiger Invitational meet at District Stadium March 28.

Eli Whitmire claimed a victory in the triple jump and placed in three other events to lead Woodland to a fourth-place finish in the boys team standings. Hockinson was seventh, Ridgefield 10th, Prairie tied for 13th and Battle Ground was 15th. Skyview was the overall winner in the boys competition.

In the girls team standings, Prairie was the top local finisher in fourth place followed by Woodland (6th), Battle Ground (9th), Ridgefield (10th) and Hockinson (tied for 16th). Camas was the girls overall team champion.

Woodland’s girls were led by Julia Stepper, who finished first in the long jump (16-2 ¼). The sophomore was also third in the 100 (12.85), third in the 200 (26.78).

Whitmire won the boys triple jump with a leap of 43-1 ¾ and he was third in the long jump (21-1 ¾). The Woodland senior finished second in the 100 meters (11.32) and seventh in the 200 (23.56). Ridgefield’s David Causey was fourth in the 100 (11.43).

Hockinson’s Tommy Harshaw claimed an individual title in the 400 with a time of 50.43, outdistancing the rest of the field by more than a full second. Ridgefield’s Brandon Lehto was third in the event with a time of 52.78. Harshaw added a second in the 200 (22.88), where he was followed by Battle Ground’s Joseph Carroll (3rd, 23.18) and Prairie’s Reuvim Ponomarenko (6th, 23.50) and Whitmire.

Hockinson’s Quentin Sills claimed the title in the javelin with a throw of 173-10. Ridgefield’s Jacob Burggraff was fifth (159-06).

Woodland’s Matthew Young was third in the 1,600 (4:39.92) and Battle Ground’s Quinn Nelson was fifth (4:48.26) in the same event. Ridgefield’s Silas Griffith was fourth in the 3,200 (9:59.61).

Prairie’s Michael Schmidt was third in the 300 hurdles (42.26) and sixth in the 110 hurdles (16.18). Schmidt was also fourth in the pole vault (11-6).

Harshaw, Kedrick Johnson, Devin Riggs and Peter Schultz-Rathbun posted a third-place finish for Hockinson in the 4X100 relay (45.14). Ridgefield (Anthony Bruno, Nathan Eggleston, Causey, and Burggraff) was fourth (45.30) and Prairie (Joshua Tasca-Quinata, Ponomarenko, Jacob Maddux, Isaiah Conley) was fifth (45.52).



Woodland (Nathan Patterson, Dillan Bonamigo-Wear, Joshua Preston, Matthew Young) was fourth in the 4X400 relay (3:38.17). Battle Ground (Kellen Butler, Adam McGraw, Quinn Nelson, Brendan Guenthler) was fourth in the medley relay (11:32.39) followed by fifth-place Hockinson (Logan Klodt, Michael Olin, Kyle Peterson, Mason Panfiglio, 12:03.86).

In the girls competition, Ridgefield’s Raigan Page was fifth in the 100 (13.01) and fourth in the 400 (1:01.92). Prairie’s Kaylin Sperley was fourth in the 200 (26.93).

Prairie’s Lindsay Asplund was third in the 800 (2:24.94) and Ridgefield’s Chloe Lindbo was fifth (2:30.86). Asplund was also third in the pole vault (10-0). Battle Ground’s Laura Shannon was fifth in the pole vault (9-6).

Prairie’s Jamie Ferris finished fourth in the 3,200 (11:58.66). The Falcons (Kaylin Sperley, Brandi Swingle, Claire Papworth, Cherita Daugherty) added a third-place finish in the 4X100 relay (51.54).

Prairie (Lindsay Asplund, Emily Lane, Jozie Tangeman, Natalie Whitesel) was fourth in the 4X400 relay (4:25.70), followed by Ridgefield (Brooke Potter, Chloe Lindbo, Kaylene Brink, Raigan Page) in fifth (4:25.97).

In the medley relay, Prairie (Megan Bruns, Jozie Tangeman, Sarah King, Emily Lane) was fourth (14:20.75) followed by fifth-place Battle Ground (Sontia Christopher, Anne Gurnik, Alexandra Walker, Madeline McClellan, 14:34.55).

Woodland’s Sarah Retter was second in the high jump (5-1), Hockinson’s Annabelle Jiganie was fourth in the discus (105-07) and Woodland’s McKenna Flanagan was fifth in the javelin (106-11). Battle Ground’s Emily Griffith was fourth in the long jump (15-6 ¾).

The triple jump had strong local representation as Prairie’s Katherine Schaefer finished second (32-9) followed by Battle Ground’s Emily Duong (3rd, 32-7) and Shaylynn Morgan (31-9 ¼) and Woodland’s Kayla Fredricks (30-8).

Fredricks was also seventh in the high jump (4-10)
