Corporate support sought for new softball field

The Vancouver Metro Senior Softball Association (VMSSA) is expanding its fundraising campaign to finance construction of a new softball field the group will build at Pacific Community Park.

The group is seeking large donations from corporations and nonprofits, especially those involved in the healthcare field, VMSSA spokesman Leon Speroff said in a news release.

A five-year commitment to sponsoring the field’s scoreboard, with company name on the board, is available for $30,000. Attaching a corporate name to a dugout for five years will cost $20,000 while sign placement on the outfield fence costs $3,050 for 24 months or $4,000 for 36 months. Sign placement on the outfield fence would normally cost $1,750 per year, Speroff said.

Naming and advertising rights will begin when the park is open and ready to play. The VMSSA timetable calls for construction beginning in August so the field is ready for spring and summer play in 2016, according to the release.

Speroff said sponsorship from those in the healthcare industry is appropriate because senior softball players are taking part in the sport to boost their own health.

“We watch our diets and work hard to stay in playing shape,” he said. “Many of us have overcome serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, operations and injuries. All senior softball players are grateful for the ability to continue playing. We want the new ballpark to inspire other seniors to share the benefits by signing up to play in a first-class facility.”

VMSSA officials hope to generate outright grants in addition to signage rights at the field. The organization has raised $100,000 of the project’s required $439,000.
