Water at Hockinson schools safe for students, officials say

BRUSH PRAIRIE — Water testing at Hockinson School District’s three schools shows the water is safe to drink, with lead levels far below federal guidelines.

“The health of our students and staff is of the greatest importance to us, and we are pleased to confirm that the water in our learning environments is safe,” said Superintendent Sandra Yager.

Hockinson conducted the testing program following state guidelines after concerns arose regarding lead contamination in school drinking water elsewhere in Washington and Oregon. High lead levels in water can contribute to health problems, particularly for young children.

Water samples were taken May 25 and 26 at multiple sites in Hockinson Heights Elementary, Hockinson Middle and Hockinson High schools. They were sent to a state-accredited laboratory for analysis. The school district received laboratory results this week.

Information about Hockinson’s lead testing program, including the results, can be found at the Hockinson School District Office weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
