The Ridgefield Public Schools Foundation (RPSF) is hosting a week-long online fundraiser, from April 29 to Sunday, May 5, to send the high school’s Knowledge Bowl team to the Quiz Bowl nationals in Atlanta this spring.

RPSF, an organization focused on fundraising for students and teachers in the district, will pay a maximum of $5,000 in matching funds to send the Ridgefield High School’s varsity team to the Quiz Bowl Nationals.

During the Quiz Bowl, students from around the world will compete in trivia. The team, led by coach David Jacobson, has won the national championship twice in the past five years, a news release stated. The team recently took the Knowledge Bowl national trophy on Saturday, April 20.

“Quiz Bowl shares many characteristics with Knowledge Bowl but has a few key differences,” Jacobson said in the news release. “This particular tournament, which fields teams from as far away as South Korea, is considered the premier academic competition in the United States. Since [our district] is committed to pursuing premier, we should give these kids a chance to test their mettle against the most academically gifted students in the country, and from around the world. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these kids that will surely impact them for the rest of their lives and bring honor to our community.”

RPSF said in the news release that they are matching $5,000 because the Quiz Bowl is a great educational opportunity for students.

“We seek to fund student opportunities that support whole student development, especially ones that public funds may not be able to fully support,” Joe Manning, an RPSF trustee said in the release. “We want to acknowledge the team’s hard work and their commitment to our Ridgefield community, and, most importantly, we want to continue to support the growth of the students who make up this team.”
