The Lewis River Rotary club recently awarded 11 academic and vocational scholarships totaling $22,000 to graduating students from various Clark County high schools.

The club has awarded scholarships for around 30 years, stated a news release.

The scholarship applications were available in local schools and online. They were then reviewed by a panel of Rotarians. The selected applicants had to pass the club’s written standards and then were individually interviewed and re-evaluated.

This year’s scholarships were given to four students from Prairie High School, two students from Battle Ground High School, two students from Hockinson High School and a student from CAM Academy, Columbia Adventist Academy and Seton Catholic Prep High School.

The students who received scholarships included Ellie Durgarian, Colleen McNicholas, Ty May, Nicholas Davis, Makayla Loose, Karleigh Potter, Ellie Ritter, Payton Lawson, Jenna Childress, James Mayhew and Abagail Wall.

Other rotary clubs in the county provided scholarships to students at other high schools in the area, stated the release.

The recipients will pursue a number of career paths like biology, industrial engineering, nursing, mechanical engineering, pre-med, auto technology, journeyman lineman, physical therapy and more.

According to the release, Kathleen Hensch-Fleming, of the Lewis River Rotary, submitted a grant to the Firstenburg Foundation, which then awarded the club $10,000 in scholarship funding. Rotary fundraising was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, stated the release.

Scholarship Chair Charlie Ross stated the Lewis River Rotary gave over $80,000 to students over the last four years since he’s been chair of the scholarship committee.

Applications for 2023 scholarships will be available in the counseling centers of Battle Ground High School, CAM Academy, Columbia Adventist Academy, Hockinson High School, and Seton Catholic Prep. They can also be found online at lewisriverrota ry.org/scholarships.

The Lewis River Rotary meets most Tuesday mornings at 7 a.m. at the Battle Ground Community Center at 912 E. Main St. in Battle Ground.
