Woodland Intermediate School has earned a Washington Achievement Award for 2014 -- its third year in a row. It is being honored in the category of High Progress.

Statewide a total of 401 schools received awards for being the highest-performing schools based on three years of academic information as reported in the Washington Achievement Index.

"We are proud of the work our Woodland Intermediate School teachers and students have done to earn these Washington Achievement Awards," Woodland School District Superintendent Michael Z. Green said.

The school also won School of Distinction awards in 2007 and 2008.

High Progress category winners represent the top 10 percent of schools making the most progress in the performance of the all-students group over three years. The Progress Score is computed by adding an Achievement Score and an Improvement Score. Reading and math achievement scores are combined.

"The Achievement Awards are an opportunity to acknowledge the school communities who have made the greatest difference in the lives of Washington students," State Board of Education Chair Isabel Muñoz-Colón said in a news release. "The State Board hopes to use this opportunity to share schools' results and their stories so that we can replicate their great work in other areas of the state."

Washington Achievement Awards recognize schools for being top performers in six categories:

• 1. Overall Excellence

• 2.. High Progress

• 3. Reading Growth

• 4. Math Growth

• 5. Extended Graduation Rate (only awarded to high and comprehensive schools)

• 6. English Language Acquisition

"Honoring successful schools is one of the most important things we do," said State Superintendent Randy Dorn. "We know schools are doing great work and are getting better at serving all students every day."

The award-winning schools will be honored at an award ceremony April 28 at Spanaway Lake High School in Bethel School District.

This is the sixth year of the Washington Achievement Awards.
