Gifts for seniors

Posted

Seasonal gift giving is supposed to be fun but finding the right gift for everyone on the Christmas list is often a challenge; add to that the older adults in our lives who have downsized or are living in active or assisted living situations.

What does one buy for a senior adult who seems to have everything or simply doesn’t have the room for or interest in one more frog statue, plant or pair of socks?

Aside from the gift of time, which we all know seems to be in higher demand every day and more difficult to come by, the following gift ideas are surprisingly obvious and sure to say “I care” the moment the wrapping paper is removed.

Adult coloring books

These came on the scene a few years ago and are still an excellent idea for brain engagement, creativity and exercising fine motor skills. Senior adults can color alone, with friends and, when family is able to visit, it’s something that can be done together to stimulate conversation.

Audio books

Reading captures the imagination and can transport the soul to another place or time. As we age, failing eyes and arthritic hands can make page turning a challenge. Audio books are an excellent way to bring stories back into a busy life or someone with failing eyes or arthritic hands. Better yet, a subscription to Audible, OverDrive, Downpour or another audiobook service is the gift that keeps on giving.

Food

We all love to indulge once in awhile. Find out what the older adults in your life really cherish and splurge for them. A tea lover may buy basic teas at the grocery store or settle for simple chamomile in an assisted living situation but what about procuring a special assortment, maybe even in a beautiful wooden box with pretty spoons, locally-sourced honey, a book about tea, a special tea cup and saucer, even a Tea of the Month subscription. Apply this concept to a myriad of simple pleasures but always consider dietary restrictions.

Lap blanket

For seniors with limited mobility, a lap blanket is a great idea. Better yet, places like Walmart, Shutterfly and Collage can create custom photo blankets so family members can hold the faces of loved ones close.

Lighted magnifier

Many senior adults enjoy craft projects but, with failing sight, it seems a room can never be lit well enough and many of the instruments, materials and tools used for crafts often require a keen eye. Consider a couple extra bulbs and batteries with the magnifier to help the gift keep on giving.

Memory journal from grandparents to grandchildren

Everyone has a story and older adults are no exception. It might seem like a generation removed has little interest in whether Grandpa walked uphill both ways in the snow to school as a child or Grandma made costumes for school plays but weaved among the day-to-day are first-hand memories of WWII, the Vanport flood, the Columbus Day storm, gasoline for 25 cents a gallon and a myriad of other fascinating moments in our history told through the pen of a relative.

Music

A song can whisk us off to a treasured memory. How about a CD series from a relative’s favorite decade, growing up years, a collection of French music for the consummate romantic or movie soundtracks from the Golden Age of Hollywood. The ideas are endless and the benefits of music include reduced anxiety, improved communication skills and the promotion of overall better health.

Photo album

With the incessant use of cell phones today it can sometimes be overwhelming to choose  the “best of” for an annual photo album but, especially for relatives living miles away or in a care facility, a few well-chosen pictures and short descriptions of the moment can bridge the gap and foster connection.

Slippers

Who couldn’t use cozy slippers with non-skid soles, particularly when the temperature drops? If an older adult in your life has circulatory issues, warm feet are a true gift.
