Come and learn about gun safety in Hockinson

The safety and well-being of their children is a concern for every parent. Protecting them from all the things which can happen as they grow up can be a challenging job for anyone.

We place bike helmets in their hands when they are going to ride a bicycle. We teach them about safety rules when they are going to rise or walk along the streets and roads. We teach them about stranger danger and not to trust people who they do not know. Seat belts are a must in our vehicles for all passengers. They are taught that doors are not to be opened without knowing who is on the other side. Young people are taught to be careful about the information they disclose when they answer the telephone. Computer safety is a big component in our technological society. Predators are out there — waiting.

But have you had the “big talk” with your young family members? You know — the one where you talk about their possible encounter with a gun/guns at school, on the bus, at a friend’s house, in sport situations or at your home?

I will be presenting, with the help of professionals, a program to help you have that important conversation. It is the second part of my Girl Scout Gold Award. The first part deals with safety around water and the use of life jackets to prevent needless accidents, which occur every year, as we recreate in, on and around water in our communities.

The flowers of tomorrow are in the seeds of today. Our young people are the future and deserve the very best efforts of the adults in their lives so they can blossom tomorrow.

Everyone is invited to come and learn more about the subject on April 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Fire Station 3, 17718 NE 159th Street in Hockinson. Come and bring your family to share in this important topic.
