MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Kindness and Care Made the Difference During New Year’s Eve Scare

Posted

Before Christmas, my wife and I bought our first RV – a 26-foot Jayco Greyhawk DS.

At 4:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve,  we, with a couple of friends, took it out on its maiden voyage.  We sailed 3 miles into Battle Ground to the Chevron to fill with gas and propane.

The fill with gas was quick and peaceful. Elizabeth, a young lady who works at Chevron, came out to fill with propane, and then the “crazy” started. After filling, she started to disconnect the propane hose. She stopped suddenly saying, “I hear a faint hiss. I think it may be leaking propane.”

I listened — heard nothing.

Elizabeth went into Chevron and called the fire department. Within a few moments, a fire truck pulled in. The crew confirmed what Elizabeth had heard, and quickly cordoned off the Chevron station for safety. They then began working to isolate the leak and see if it could be stopped.  Without success in stopping the leak, they finally decided to drain the RV propane and flush the parking area. The crew finally finished this job about 7 p.m.

Meanwhile my wife, me and our friends spent New Year’s Eve in the local Chevron being treated to smiles, friendship, and hot chocolate as we waited. Words are inadequate to express our thanks to:

- Elizabeth for sensing a danger and reacting quickly for the safety of Chevron customers.

- The men and women of the Battle Ground Fire Department who quickly assessed and worked to solve a potentially explosive situation.

- The Chevron lady who was planning on spending New Year’s Eve elsewhere, but got stuck in the station because her car was parked behind the safety barrier.

- All – Elizabeth, the Battle Ground fire department, and the Chevron ladies for maintaining  smiles, and a cheerful friendly attitude through the whole unexpected evening.

It was a crazy New Year’s Eve, but one made safer, more pleasant, and less crazy by the wonderful people of Chevron and the Battle Ground Fire Department. Kudos to you all. You deserve the best of what the New Year offers.
