I was recently contacted by a group known as the “500,000 Voices of Southwest Washington” and asked to take a “comprehensive” survey because they needed to fill certain respondent categories. I am a semi-retired doctorate student at Washington State University. I understand what survey validity means. I can tell you that this survey is scientifically and ethically bankrupt.
• 1. A valid survey can only be taken one time by one person. Not multiple times. This survey has no quality control. I took the survey several times.
• 2. A valid survey is not designed to give pre-determined outcomes. A push-poll is. This survey makes the statement “Climate change requires us to change our way of life such as driving less or living more simply.” The choices were “Feels strongly,” “Leans Towards,” or “Don’t Know.” I guess there is no room for climate deniers in this poll.
• 3. Where did they get my email? The Columbian said they “turned to Clark College and Washington State University Vancouver to help spread the word among their students.”
This phony survey is fielded by the Community Foundation of Southwest Washington. I suggest that you use your “voice.” Let them know you don’t appreciate political manipulation.
