Two Battle Ground Public Schools Board of Directors members have announced their resignations effective in the next few weeks while the school district looks to fill vacancies that will face elections this year.

District 4 director Mavis Nickels and District 2 director Ken Root announced their resignations during the Feb. 11 board meeting, according to a release from the district. Root’s resignation was effective Feb. 26 while Nickels’ was March 15.

The District has opened applications for those looking to fill the two positions until March 4. Those who apply must be registered to vote and live in the district for the seat that represents it. Both seats are up for the election later this year.

The district touched on some of the outgoing directors’ accomplishments, both of whom have served on the board for eight years. Nickels had been the board’s legislative representative while also serving on the board’s Audit and Tours committees, the Human Resources Committee, and as the board’s vice president. Root has served as the board’s president and vice president and on Audit and Tours committees, and was a liaison between the board and the Battle Ground Education Foundation as well as a member of the Washington State School Directors’ Association Nominating Committee.

“Mavis and Ken have given a decade of their lives to supporting the students of our community,” Superintendent Mark Ross stated in the release. “We are forever grateful for their service.”

Those interested in the positions are directed to send a letter of interest, resume and list of three references with contact information no later than March 4 to Sandy U’Ren, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent and Board of Directors, Battle Ground Public Schools Board of Directors, P. O. Box 200, Battle Ground, WA 98604, or by e-mail to uren.sandy@battlegroundps.org.

Applicants are asked to include their full name, physical address, an email address and telephone number.
