During a Sept. 9 Battle Ground School Board meeting, board members selected three finalists for the contract to identify and recruit top candidates for superintendent of Battle Ground Public Schools.

The public is invited to participate in the process of selecting one of the three.

There were a total of four applicants for the contract. The public and district employees had been invited to read their applications and grade them on each of several points. School board members and 24 community members and district employees participated in the evaluation process. The results were examined and discussed during the Sept. 9 meeting.

In a 5-0 vote and with the concurrence by members of the audience who had participated in the process, board members John Idsinga, Monty Anderson, Ken Root, Mavis Nickels and Steve Pagel selected these finalists for the contract:

• McPherson & Jacobson, LLC., of Omaha, NE, with consulting staff from Olympia (www.macnjake.com)

• Ray and Associates, Inc., of Cedar Rapids, IA, with consulting staff from Tacoma (www.rayassoc.com)

• Educational Service District 112, Vancouver (web3.esd112.org)

The fourth applicant was Proact Search of Willamete, IL.

The three finalists will make presentations to school board members and the public at a special school board meeting Tues., Sept. 17, 6 p.m., at Chief Umtuch Middle School, 700 NW Ninth Ave., Battle Ground. Board members do not expect to make a decision that night, Idsinga said.

The Sept. 9 meeting was the first of the 2013-2014 school year and the first regular night meeting, separate from “special” meetings, in recent years. The board has scheduled two regular meetings for most months this year. One, usually on the second Monday, will begin at 6:30 p.m. The other, usually the fourth Monday, will start at 4 p.m. The full calendar of the board’s regular meetings is accessible at www.battlegroundps.org under the “School Board” link at the right.

Board members also heard a preliminary enrollment report from Interim Deputy Superintendent Lynn Hicks. The district’s total head-count enrollment as of Sept. 9 was 12,936 and full-time equivalent enrollment was 12,239.
