Battle Ground Community Ed offering plethora of camps this summer

Battle Ground Community Education recently released it’s schedule of 2018 summer camps.

BrickZone Kids

Robotics Camp at Chief Umtuch Middle School cafeteria: July 9-13, 9 a.m. 3 p.m., $181.  

At this summer camp, children will build LEGO projects, use computers to program them to move, and explore the world of beginning computer coding and engineering through LEGOs. Campers will be challenged to work with partners to design, build and program their own models and watch them move. They will also have LEGO free builds, play outdoor tag games and more. 

Bring a peanut-free sack lunch and wear tennis shoes to play tag outside (weather permitting).

Students must be picked up and signed out at 3 p.m.

YMCA Camps 

Y Chefs — Chefs in Training, ages 7-12 in the Battle Ground High School cafeteria: July 9-13, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., $191. 

This camp will teach children how to make quick, yummy foods that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Campers will receive lessons in cooking safety, cooking techniques, preparing food and more. No previous cooking experience required. 

Storybook Y Chefs, ages 4-6 at Battle Ground High School cafeteria: July 9-13, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $121. Childhood storybooks come to life. Students will read various stories then recreate a recipe that goes along with the book.

DIY Crafts, ages 7-12 at Battle Ground High School cafeteria, July 16-20, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.,$191. Participants will do hands-on projects that they can take home. 

Art Factory, ages 4-6 at the Battle Ground High School cafeteria, July 16-20, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Price is $121. Kids will stir their imagination as they explore their creativity using different textures, colors, and shapes. 

Star Wars, ages 7-12 at Battle Ground High School cafeteria, August 6-10, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., $191. Participants begin the week as Padawans who are preparing to begin their Jedi training. Throughout the week, these Padawans are challenged through daily Star Wars themed crafts, games, and other activities.

6-8 Co-ed Flag Football at BGHS Stadium: August 6-10, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., $150

QuickStart Sports flag football camps will focus on developing passing skills, catching skills, ability to properly run with the ball, defensive positioning, how to properly pull the flag and angles, route running, and more. 

Baseball  

K-2 Co-ed Tee-ball at BGHS Softball JV Field: August 13-16, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., $110

3-5 Co-ed Baseball at BGHS Softball JV Field: August 13-16, 1 p.m.-4 p.m., $110

6-8 Co-ed Baseball at BGHS Softball JV Field: August 20-24, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., $150

QuickStart Sports summer baseball camps will focus on various drills, exercises, competitions and games that are fun and will teach each player the necessary skills and fundamentals of baseball.  Aspects of the game that will be focused on during the camp include: throwing, catching, hitting, fielding, running the bases and more.  Additionally, campers will work on various agility exercises aimed to improve quickness and mobility. 

Skyhawks Sports

Multi-sport 

Mini-Hawk Camp at Captain Strong Large Gym: July 16-20, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $126

This multi-sport program was developed to give children a positive first step into athletics. Baseball, basketball and soccer are taught. Through games and activities, campers explore balance, hand/eye coordination, and skill development.

Baseball 

Baseball Camp at Battle Ground High School JV Softball Field: July 30-Aug. 3, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $130

This camp teaches the fundamentals of fielding, catching, throwing, hitting and base running. 

UK Elite Soccer Camps

Full Day Camp at Battle Ground High School Stadium: July 23-27, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., $148

Half Day Camp at Chief Umtuch Fields: July 23-27, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $99

Athletes ages 9 -14.  Camps prepare individual players for more advanced technical skills and an understanding of individual and group tactics.  

Prairie Falcons Volleyball Junior’s Camp

Half-day Camp at Prairie High School Gyms: July 16-18, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $76

This camp focuses on improving individual skills and technique through the use of a variety of progression drills and learning situations. Players are divided first by age and then by skill level to maximize the learning potential for each camper.

Future Falcons Hoops Camp

Grades 1-8 at Prairie High School Gyms, June 18-21, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $101

Campers receive a t-shirt and 12 hours of basketball instruction and games.



NW Reign Volleyball Camps

Setting Camp at Daybreak Middle School gym: July 19-20, 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m., $66

All Skills Intermediate/Advanced Camp at Daybreak Middle School gym: July 23-25, 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m., $91

Hitting Camp at Daybreak Middle School gym: July 26-27, 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m., $66

All Skills Beginning/Intermediate Camp at Daybreak Middle School gym: July 30-Aug. 1, 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m., $91

Defense Camp at Daybreak Middle School Gym: August 2-3, 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m., $66

Camps will have various drills and mini-games. Coaches will match athletes to the appropriate court assignments based on their experience and knowledge of volleyball. 

Girls Tiger Cage Basketball Camp

Incoming Kindergarten through 6th grade at Battle Ground High School gyms: July 26-29, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., $101

Incoming 7th grade through 9th grade at Battle Ground High School gyms: July 26-29, 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m., $101

Suitable levels of skill and competition will be provided for girls ages 5-15. Incoming kindergarten through 6th grade will be taught the fundamentals of basketball. Incoming 7th through 9th grade will be given more competitive drills and scrimmages. Cage Camp coaches will include Lisa May, BGHS Head Girls Basketball Coach, as well as BGHS Girls Varsity Basketball Players. 

How to Successfully Fish Local Waters

Two days a week at Laurin Middle School gym: June 12-July 26, 3 p.m.-4 p.m., or 7 p.m.- 8 p.m., $68 

Introduction to fly fishing. Ages 10 and up learn how and where to successfully fish local waters for trout, steelhead, salmon and sturgeon from local fishing guide Darrell Kirkpatrick. Fishing regulations, ecology, safety, ethics, location, seasons, tackle, bait, etiquette, casting, drifting, plunking and knot tying techniques will be the focus of the class. All materials and equipment provided.

Culinary Camps

Young Chef’s Competition at Battle Ground High School: July 17, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., $51

Based on the show “Junior Chef,” students will work with four hidden ingredients, along with pantry ingredients to create an appetizer and a dessert. Chefs will have 40 minutes (for each dish) to prepare and plate their dishes for judges to evaluate. Chefs, you’re on your own in this class! Bring a healthy sack lunch, an apron, water bottle, and containers. Wear close-toed shoes for safety. Long hair must be tied back.

Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate! at Battle Ground High School: July 19, 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., $51. Lead by Chef Susan. Students will learn the history of chocolate as they prepare a variety of old favorites and new recipes. Bring a healthy sack lunch, an apron, water bottle, and containers. Wear close-toed shoes for safety. Long hair must be tied back.

Ages 4-8 Camps

Ocean Camp

Ocean Camp – Yacolt, at Yacolt Primary School, Portable C, July 9-13, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $121.

Ocean Camp – Battle Ground, at Captain Strong Room 20, July 16-20, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. $121. 

Each day life under the ocean will be explored, from the animals to the environment. Whales to plankton, saltwater, sand, shells, songs, games, books, math science and more. 

Dynamic Dinosaur Camp at Captain Strong Primary School, room 20: July 23-27, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $12. Camper will explore the past with fun hands on activities like making fossils, followed by an archeological dig to find the fossils. They will learn how a volcano works and then will build a volcano and make it explode. The camp will feature singing, art, reading, eating and playing, all the Dino way. A week-long project making 

our own “dino-rama” will come home with each child at the end of camp.

Terrific Tactiles Camp at Captain Strong Primary School, room 20: July 30-August 3, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., $121. Each child will make and play with a new type of concoction every day. They will get messy, measure using math skills, and create with different accessories. Goop, Gak, funny putty, invisible ink, and paper machete, along with stories, songs, games and camp like fun.Junior Space Camp at Captain Strong Primary School, room 20: August 6-10, 9 a.m.-12.p.m., $12. Each day students will learn about the Solar system. They will explore the Moon, how its’ craters formed, the Moon’s phases and gravitational pull on our Earth. They will learn about the stars, their actual size, shape and energy. Through art, visuals, acting, reading, and play they will learn about the movement of stars and planets. They will compare and graph weight, and experiment with what gravity is like on other planets. Each child will make their own solar system, and create and name their own star, as well as bring home informative handouts on what we learned.

Ages 6-16 at Lewisville Gym: July 28, 11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m., $13.

This camp focuses on health through games, training of sports and mixed martial arts.

These lessons are designed for high school varsity-level players who want to improve their strokes, consistency, strategy, and fitness. They are geared toward students who have played high school tennis before and are looking to improve on already established skills. Drills are competitive and simulate match-style points that help build mental confidence.
