Building statistics for 2017 show solid growth

It’s no secret that Clark County is growing, and building statistics certainly show that growth according to the Building Industry Association of Clark County.

The first six months of building activity in 2017 underscore that growth, showing significant gains in work, a release from the BIA of Clark County stated.

Permits for single-family residences were up from the year-to-date of 2016, as through June there were 862 permits this year, up more than 19 percent from last year’s numbers. Month-by-month comparisons showed similar growth, as for example in the month of June 2017 permits were also up about 19 percent compared to June of 2016.

Outside of new construction, remodeling has also seen strong growth. For the first half of the year, the release stated Increasing by nearly a third over 2016’s first six months, by the end of June there had been 395 permits in 2017 over 2016’s 300.

The most drastic increase over last year is multifamily residence permitting. Those permits went up 3,000 percent, with 30 issued as of the released information. The jump is due to only one multifamily permit happening in the first six months of 2016, whereas 30 were issued in a similar space of time this year, in total representing 361 new units.

“We are in the midst of a high growth era,” Aaron Marvin, president of BIA of Clark County, stated in the release. “The growth rate for the County was 2.17 percent from April of 2016 to April of 2017, far higher than the 1.26 percent growth figure used in the most recent Comprehensive Growth Management Plan.”

“This is why the BIA believes so strongly that we must use the most accurate figures available when preparing for our region’s future,” Marvin continued. “We want to make sure everyone that wants to live out their American dream can purchase a home. To keep housing affordable, we must have an adequate land supply.”
