Two young women, Kylie Sahota and Hannah Stuchlik, both seniors at Battle Ground High School, received a total of $1,800 in scholarships from GFWC-Battle Ground (General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Battle Ground branch) at the service club’s April 26 meeting. The club offers scholarships annually.

First place winner was Kylie Sahota who received $1,000. She is a biology major with 90 college credits through Running Start at Clark College and maintains a 4.0 grade point average. Her interests are marine biology and genetics.

As first place winner in the local club’s program, Kylie’s scholarship application was forwarded to GFWC-Washington State. It was announced at the state convention last month that she was the top scholar among the finalists from across the state which resulted in an additional $2,500 for her.

Hannah, the second place winner, received $800 from the local club. She aims for a career as a veterinarian and currently works part-time at Alder Creek Veterinary Clinic as a kennel assistant. Her grade point average is 4.0 in the Clark College Running Start program.

“Both young women are committed to volunteerism which was considered in the awards,” said Leese Pohl, the club’s scholarship chairman.

GFWC-International’s motto is “Living the Volunteer Spirit.”

Money for scholarships is generated from profits from the annual fall Ladybug Bazaar, the club’s major fundraiser. Only young women who will attend Washington State institutions of higher learning are eligible for the club’s scholarships and the awards can only be used toward tuition.
