Battle Ground salon gets green with Washington-made products

Hair stylist Joanie Pomerenke knows a thing or two about trends. After all, she’s been in the beauty business for more than 30 years, and has owned her own salon, Classy Lass Salon in Battle Ground, for almost 11 years.

Pomerenke understands that hair trends come and go, but there’s one thing that will always remain constant: Helping her clients look and feel their absolute best.

“That’s why I love this job,” Pomerenke says. “We’re having fun and the clients leave feeling good about themselves.”

Of course, looking good and feeling good aren’t the same thing, as Pomerenke well knows.

“I had a lot of clients coming in with skin problems and the products were making it worse,” Pomerenke says. “About four years ago, I started researching the ingredients in our products, and we started looking for a more natural line.”

After a lot of trial and error, Pomerenke and her staff of six stylists at Classy Lass found a product line that was natural enough to keep their clients’ skin and hair healthy, but robust enough to stand up to a team of professionals’ scrutiny.

“We found that a lot of the products, even though they were organic and natural, weren’t good for the hair,” Pomerenke says. “I wanted products that would leave the hair feeling good, but wouldn’t leave a residue. I also wanted something that smelled good, without using perfumes, which can irritate the scalp.”

Pomerenke got her wish with the Loma hair product line. Created by a former hair stylist turned organic chemist, the Loma line uses certified organic aloe vera gel as the primary base for its line of shampoos, conditioners, hair treatments and styling products and are completely free of common irritants like parabens, gluten, sulfates and sodium chloride.

Instead of using harsh chemical perfumes, the Loma products incorporate essential oils like orange and vanilla, which give the products a fresh, light scent.

“They smell great, not overpowering like some products,” Pomerenke says of the Loma line of hair products. “And they leave the clients’ hair feeling and looking great. Really, they sell themselves.”

Going “green” may be a trend in the salon business, but it’s a trend that Pomerenke and her clients appreciate.

“The Loma company is sustainable, which I like … but their price points are still reasonable,” Pomerenke says.

In fact, the Loma products are often less expensive than the big name salon brands people are used to seeing. And the company is dedicated to producing a smaller carbon footprint – blending their products in small batches, printing and filling their own bottles right here in Washington state and refusing to outsource their labor or manufacturing processes.

Pomerenke was so impressed with the Loma products, that she ordered the full line for her Battle Ground salon.

“We tested about six other products before we found Loma,” she says.

The Classy Lass Salon, located at 720 W. Main St., Suite 106, in Battle Ground, carries the full line of Loma products, which includes shampoos, conditioners, styling products and hair treatments like Loma’s Fortifying Repairative Tonic, a cranberry-pear scented blend of jojoba, olive, baobab and acai oils that helps protect and strengthen hair.
