Here are the seminars coming up in April at Tsugawa Nursery. Tsugawa Nursery is located at 410 E. Scott Ave., Woodland.

Spring has finally arrived and now is the time to start setting out all sorts of new plants in the garden. Seeds to start and scatter, plants to fertilize, pruning to do. Bring pictures and samples for the staff to look at during the Q & A portion. This is a regular seminar on the first Saturday of every month. Space is limited, register ahead online at http://www.tsugawanursery.com/events.htm or call (360) 225-8750. This seminar is free and open to the public.

Japanese Maple Pruning with Brian Tsugawa, Sat., April 12, 11 a.m.: Japanese maples are elegant in all seasons and can enhance any landscape with their beautiful forms. Join Brian Tsugawa as he teaches proper pruning techniques for Japanese Maples. He’ll also help attendees understand how to develop an appropriate silhouette for their trees at home. Afterward, browse the selection of these trees. Space is limited, register ahead online at http://www.tsugawanursery.com/events.htm or call (360) 225-8750. Root-Pruning, Wiring and Re-potting Your Bonsai, Sat., April 19, 11 a.m.: Bonsai trees thrive on regular love and attention, but root pruning can sometimes be intimidating. The staff at Tsugawa will help take the intimidation out of that task as they instruct attendees on how best to take care of their root pruning. You’ll also learn proper wiring and they’ll help you get set up with a pot for transplanting if your bonsai needs it. Don’t forget to bring your bonsai with you. There will be a fee for any potting materials used during class. Silent observers are welcome free of charge. Space is limited, register ahead online at http://www.tsugawanursery.com/events.htm or call (360) 225-8750. Fee is dependent upon materials used during class.

Seventh Annual Spring Potting Party, Sat., April 26, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.: It’s time for the first Potting Party of the 2014 season. Tsugawa staff  will provide the soil, fertilizer and hands-on assistance to help you create some exciting and colorful planted containers for your home. All you have to do is show up with your containers and some ideas of what you’d like. This will be an “open house” event, so come any time between 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Fee is dependent upon materials used.

Celebrating 30-plus years, Tsugawa Nursery is a family-owned-and-operated business. The Tsugawa family began berry farming in Woodland in 1947. George and Mable Tsugawa were married in 1950 and raised six children. The Tsugawa family worked hard together to make their farm successful, initially growing strawberries. In January 1981, the Tsugawa family purchased a defunct nursery in Woodland. They opened Tsugawa Nursery in March  1981 with very little nursery stock, but plenty of vision for things to come. The nursery has grown and has become well established as one of the area’s best place to shop for garden and landscape plants and supplies.
