Local couple opening restaurant, more at old Cedars Golf Course clubhouse

Later this spring, a local couple will open a new restaurant, event venue and more, focusing on elevated Americana and featuring a little of everything at the old Cedars Golf Course clubhouse in Battle Ground.

Husband and wife duo Ryan and Jenn Chadwick lead a family affair with Ryan’s parents. The Chadwicks already own businesses in the household services and hospitality sectors. They have never owned a restaurant before, and never considered it a goal, but are moving ahead with The Cedars Public House after seeing a need in the community.

Currently, they are planning to open their multi-amenity location featuring an elevated menu. They hope to present an upscale atmosphere with their menu still meeting local restaurant prices.

“We have a heavy, heavy, heavy emphasis on community,” Ryan Chadwick said. “Our goal with this whole thing is to make something that is a big value add to this area in a way that it’s not looking to take advantage of the community. It’s looking to make something that is a fun destination for everybody who lives out here and treats them well and where they feel welcome and included.”

In addition to a restaurant, the venue will host events, and the downstairs of the building will be transformed from clubhouse locker rooms into a destination for relaxation and movie goers. The old golf course pro shop will turn into a coffee lounge and gift shop, which will include goods from local artisans, as well as groceries for the nearby residents, Jenn Chadwick said.

“By the end, what we will have will be a restaurant and bar, event space, gift shop, splash coffee bar lounge, small bodega with groceries for the locals,” Ryan Chadwick explained. “And then in the basement, we’re looking at half of it being a day spa with a wet spa component … and then the other half of the basement, we’re hoping to be able to have three small living room theaters.”

During the planning process, the couple struggled with financing, and Jenn Chadwick believes the pandemic has caused banks to postpone lending funds for new businesses in the entertainment, dining and hospitality sectors. They did build up a lot of excitement while getting to know the community, she said.

“We love the neighbors. They drop by regularly,” Jenn Chadwick said. “We did our sneak peek open house in December, and we did little invites, and we dropped them on everybody’s doorstep around here … and we invited 325 people, and we stopped counting at like 250, so many people showed up.”

With the anticipation of The Cedars Public House building up, the first piece slated to open will be The Gilded Bean drive thru and walk-up coffee shop located on the property. Ryan Chadwick is hopeful that the coffee shop will be opening this month, pending permits and inspections.

Next, the Chadwicks anticipate opening the pub with light food service in April. They hope to host a full restaurant grand opening at the end of May and are currently taking event bookings for June and beyond.

The restaurant menu will feature American favorites, such as mac and cheese and pizza. Jenn Chadwick added that soups, sandwiches and salads will also feature heavily on their menu.

The couple will do more than just own the restaurant. The Chadwicks, who moonlight as musicians, intend to perform in their free time to add to the dining atmosphere. They will also feature other area musicians, playing jazz, indie rock, folk and more.

“We will be fairly selective in the musicians that we bring in. As far as the quality of music — it will be pretty good,” Ryan Chadwick said.

To enhance the dining experience, they will have live piano with recorded music mixed in.
