Keep summer fun with senior activities in Battle Ground

BATTLE GROUND – Summer time is almost here and senior citizens in the Battle Ground area can continue to find plenty of things to do by choosing from a variety of activities offered by the Battle Ground Parks & Recreation Department.

Activities include lunch outings, potluck days, exercise classes and more.

Different senior activities are offered through the Battle Ground Parks & Recreation Department. These activities are listed in the Senior Scene, a quarterly publication of the Battle Ground Senior Citizens Advisory Board and the Battle Ground Parks & Recreation Department. This publication highlights activities, events and items of interest in the Battle Ground area. Most activities are offered on an ongoing basis.

Here’s what’s coming up this summer for area seniors:

The Mad Hatters Club

The Mad Hatters Club meets on the second Friday of each month. There are no membership fees or red hats required. The only requirement is that you join the group when you can, bring an appetite and have some fun. So, put on any hat and join the club.

Upcoming outings of the Mad Hatters Club include:

Lunch and Wine Tasting at Bethany Vineyards, Friday, July 8, 11:30 a.m.: Swirl, smell and sip … raise your glass and make a toast to the good life because life doesn’t get any better than sampling some local wines in a beautiful setting. New lunch menu available that will pair nicely with a glass of wine. There is a $5 wine tasting fee for non-club members. Meet at Bethany Vineyards, located just west of town at 4115 NE 259th St., Ridgefield, at 11:30 a.m. Dutch treat.

Lunch at Hometown Burgers & Breakfasts, Friday, Aug. 12, 11:30 a.m.: Eat at Hometown Burgers & Breakfasts, located in the Wilco shopping complex (in the old Fatty Patty’s space). Bring a big appetite for some homestyle cooking. Meet at the restaurant at 11:30 a.m. Dutch treat.

Senior Center activities

These activities take place at the Battle Ground Senior Center, located at 116 NE 3rd Ave., Battle Ground.

Senior Potluck Day



Senior Potluck Day takes place on the second Monday of each month, doors open at 10 a.m., lunch served at noon, there is a suggested donation of $1 per person. 

Bunco

Enjoy a game of Bunco on the third Friday of each month, noon-3 p.m., noon potluck, at the Battle Ground Senior Center, 116 NE 3rd Ave., Battle Ground. Cost is $5 per person, per day. Roll the dice and play Bunco. This game is fun and fast-paced. Anyone can play, no previous game experience or partner required. It’s easy and fun to learn and play.

Senior Lunch Program at BG Community Center

Seniors age 60 and older are invited to join the Meals on Wheels People on weekdays for a hot and nutritious lunch. Typically there are two entrees offered each day. A monthly newsletter, which includes a complete menu, is available at the Battle Ground Community Center, 912 E. Main St., Battle Ground. Younger guests can also join the lunch crowd for a small fee of $6.70 per person.

Lunches are offered daily, Monday-Friday, except holidays. Lunch is served at noon. There is a $3 suggested donation for seniors, age 60 and older. Note that the senior lunch will not be available on the following dates in observance of major holidays: Monday, July 4.

Fitness & Wellness Classes

There are several popular fitness classes available for adults and seniors. These classes are offered at the Battle Ground Community Center, 912 E. Main St., Battle Ground. Find one that fits your lifestyle and your fitness goals or try out all of them.

Pilates Fitness Class

Pilates helps to build flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination and increases circulation. People who do Pilates say they have better posture, are less prone to injury and experience better overall health. All classes are an eight-week session. The summer session begins the week of June 21. Classes are held Tuesday mornings, 8:30-9:30 a.m., and Thursday mornings, 8:30-9:30 a.m. Cost is $50 for eight-week session. Senior Enhanced Fitness Program

This course is a group exercise program for people 60 years of age and older. The program helps to improve balance, flexibility, bone density, endurance, coordination and mental sharpness, and decreases your risk of falling. Classes are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8:30-9:30 a.m. or 9:45-10:45 a.m. Fee is $1 per person, per day.
