In loving memory of Jared Edison Newman

Posted

Jared Edison Newman, devoted husband and father, died Feb. 11, 2024, at home in Provo, Utah. Jared was born Aug. 2, 1978, in Portland, Oregon, to Thomas and Teridee Newman. He was raised on the family farm in La Center.

As a youth Jared excelled in music and athletics. He earned letters in music, varsity football, wrestling, track and cross country. Jared’s 1996 high school 3,200 meter record still stands. After high school, Jared attended Ricks College in Idaho on a track scholarship. Devoted to his faith, Jared served a two-year LDS church Spanish-speaking mission in New Jersey. Following his mission, while working in California, he met the love of his life, Emily Hatch. They married in the Oakland LDS Temple, March 23, 2001. They later moved to Provo where Jared worked at the Orem Costco.

Despite being diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer, Jared remained extremely vigorous. He climbed Mt. St. Helens with his son, James, and daughter, Allison, later climbing Mount Adams and taking a strenuous 11-mile kayak trip down the Lewis River, across the Columbia River and back to La Center.

Jared is survived by his wife, Emily; daughter, Alison; and son, James, of Provo, Utah; parents, Thomas and Teridee Newman, of La Center; brother, Peter, Springdale, Arkansas; sisters, Rachel Shannon of Olathe, Kansas, Rebekah Emrich, Snohomish, Washington, and Elisabeth Bassett of Lake Oswego, Oregon; and by his numerous nephew and nieces.

Our family would like to especially thank Jeff Green, hospice nurse, for his loving care of Jared and his family, and the generosity of Tony and Kathy Tidwell.
