In loving memory of Carol 'Sue' Whitney: 1945-2023

Carol Susan “Sue” Whitney, 77, of Vancouver, Washington, passed away peacefully in her home on June 2, 2023.

Sue was born on August 18, 1945, in Vancouver, Washington, to John M. Wilson and Mary Ellen (Sparks) Wilson and was the youngest of ten children. She was proud of her American Indian heritage she inherited from her mother. Sue grew up in Amboy, Washington, where she enjoyed working in her family’s garage and restaurant.

In 1963, she graduated from Battle Ground High School where she met her husband, Gary Whitney. They wed the following December and were married for 51 years until Gary’s death in 2015. They raised four children on their property near the old Whitney family farm.

Over the years, Sue spent countless hours volunteering at school and working for the election board, and later as an active member of the Fargher Lake Grange. She was an exceptional housekeeper and her washing machine was always going. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends. Most of her days involved spending some time reading with a good cup of coffee. Sue had a heart for others and enjoyed visiting with and caring for those who were ailing. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. But of all the things she loved, her grandchildren, whom she and Gary referred to as “The Naughties,” were her greatest joy. All of them looked forward to spending time with her, cooking, watching movies and being spoiled.

Sue is survived by her children Heidi (Jim) Hobson and Amy (Mike) Buma of Battle Ground, Kathryn (Doug) Denney of La Center, and Grant (Amy) Whitney of Vancouver; thirteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and her sister Anita Scott of Culdesac, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gary, her parents and eight of her siblings.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Charter Oak Church, 12212 NE 299th St., Battle Ground, Washington.
