A county environmental partnership, “Poop Smart Clark,” is offering grants up to $20,000 to fix failing septic systems for low to moderate income households near the East Fork Lewis River.

“Septic system repairs can be costly, and failing septic systems can cause major environmental and health problems,” a news release stated.

Poop Smart Clark provides direct financial assistance to residents living near polluted streams.

Alongside smaller rebates, the program offers grants up to $20,000 for a limited number of major septic system repairs or full replacements, the release stated. The program receives funding through the Washington State Conservation Commission.

Low to moderate income households in parts of the East Fork Lewis River watershed can apply by Nov. 6 for assistance. More information is available online at poopsmartclark.org/septic-reimbursement-program, by email at poopsmart@clarkcd.org or by phone at 360-859-4848.

Poop Smart Clark is a partnership between the Clark Conservation District, county government and the Washington State University Extension office, the release stated. The outreach program focuses on reducing fecal bacteria from local waterways.

“(P)ooping is a solitary action, but watershed clean up takes a village,” the release stated.
