Battle Ground’s Daybreak Gardens to hold Bonsai Fundamentals Class

Bonsai is a Japanese word meaning “plant in a pot,’’ but more than that, it is an art form that has an additional dimension – life.

From China to Japan to the U.S., the horticultural and artistic pleasurable challenge called “bonsai’’ is now an established art form for both hobbyist and professional.

Battle Ground’s Daybreak Gardens will hold its 18th annual Bonsai Fundamentals Class on Sat., March 15, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. (or 4 p.m.). There is a maximum capacity of eight students per class and the spaces fill up quickly. The bonsai nursery will schedule a March 22 class if necessary.

This is a comprehensive day-long class with six pages of illustrated take-home notes for later review. Subjects include: history, design, soils and fertilizers, containers, tools, wiring, pruning and year-round care.

The cost of $60 includes 5-6 hours of instruction with hands-on root pruning and repotting of a 2-gallon practice plant. The student will then do initial styling on his or her own conifer to take home with pot and soil for repotting next year.

This class has been so successful and enjoyable for both beginning and experienced bonsai enthusiasts in the past, that several attendees have returned to take the class a second time. The mystery of bonsai instruction on the internet, and even books, is dispelled by hands-on practice with personal instruction.

Because of limited spaces, the nursery requires pre-payment and pre-registration. Call Daybreak Gardens at (360) 687-5641 for more details. Daybreak Gardens is located at 25321 NE 72nd Ave.
