Clark County Public Health removed the warning signs at Battle Ground Lake Thursday after two water samples did not show elevated levels of bacterial contamination.

Public Health posted warning signs at the swim beach July 20 after an investigation into two shigellosis cases identified the lake as a possible source of infection.

Shigellosis is an infection caused by several strains of shigella, a type of bacteria that can live in human intestines and is spread through fecal-oral transmission. Symptoms include nausea and vomiting. Illness usually lasts three to 10 days. Infections can be severe, particularly in young children and the elderly and may require hospitalization.

Water samples taken July 20 showed acceptable water quality. A second set of samples were taken July 23 and also showed acceptable water quality, prompting Public Health to lift the warning.

Clark County Public Health has also lifted the warning at Klineline Pond after the latest water samples did not show elevated levels of bacterial contamination.

Public Health announced the removal of signs July 27 after initially posting the warnings July 24 following routine testing at the pond that showed elevated levels of E. coli bacteria, which can cause serious gastrointestinal illness when water is accidentally swallowed.
