Letter to the editor: I will carry out my responsibilities as auditor with highest level of integrity

Posted

This is in response to Deborah Larner’s recent letter to the editor.

As Clark County auditor, I have been accessible and responsive to every person, or organization, with questions or concerns regarding the auditor’s office, including the elections administration process. I am proud of my record and the fact that I have appeared at hundreds of gatherings, large and small.

I withdrew one week before the Clark County Republican Women’s debate after learning the debate’s moderator had publicly endorsed my opponent, creating an obvious bias. To many observers, it appeared that event was going to be nothing more than a campaign event for my opponent disguised as a “debate.”

In contrast, the other candidate for county auditor canceled his commitment to participate in an interview of both candidates by The Columbian Editorial Board less than 30 minutes before it was scheduled to begin. Last week, he refused to be interviewed by a reporter.

Every election is audited. These audits are conducted in public with participation by representatives of the Republican and Democratic parties and the League of Women Voters.

Under Washington law, access to election computers by anyone other than an elections office employee could result in the Secretary of State decertifying the voting system. Replacement of that system would cost taxpayers more than $500,000.

Clark County’s voter rolls are scrupulously maintained in compliance with state and federal laws. Anyone with evidence of inaccuracies is encouraged to contact me.

I am committed to carrying out all of my responsibilities as county auditor with the highest level of integrity. The best test of the integrity of an election is a recount. Each recount I have conducted affirmed the original results. Two recounts in 2021 of more than 33,000 ballots demonstrated again that our ballot processing equipment and software are 100% accurate.

Anyone with questions or concerns regarding any aspect of the Clark County Auditor’s Office, including elections administration, is encouraged to contact me. My phone number is 360-521-6685 and my email address is greg@gregkimsey.com.
