A long weekend of activities will take place in Woodland as the city celebrates its 101st Planters Days from Thursday, June 15 through Sunday, June 18.
The four-day event will include parades, a Planters Days queen coronation, fireworks, food and a variety of sales.
“It’s pretty nice to see everyone out and together with these events,” Planters Days President Keith Bellisle said. “Last year was really nice and looks like everyone is just as enthusiastic about it for this year.”
According to the Woodland Planters Days website, a carnival will take place at Horseshoe Lake Park from 3 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 15.
“This will be the first time in three years that we have the carnival so everybody is looking forward to that,” Bellisle said.
A children’s chalk art event will kick off in downtown Woodland at 4 p.m. on Thursday, followed by a 5 p.m. children’s parade and a pet parade at 5:30 p.m. All three of those events will occur on Davidson Avenue.
The Planters Days queen coronation will take place from 8 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, at the Horseshoe Lake Park gazebo. Following the coronation, a fireworks show will occur at 10 p.m.
On Friday, June 16, Planters Days will get started with the Library Friends’ book sale, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the southwest corner of Goerig Street and Lakeshore Drive. The carnival will start at 3 p.m. and will run until 10 p.m.
The Woodland Farmers Market will also take place on June 16 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Hoffman Plaza. There will also be a music recital from 3 to 5 p.m. at the gazebo in Horseshoe Lake Park.
Then at 5 p.m., the Woodland Moose Lodge will offer kielbasa sausage and corn on the cob. That will be followed by Friday night bingo, which starts at 6:30 p.m., at the middle school commons at 755 Park St. Also at 6:30 p.m., the set up for the Saturday Market will take place at the U.S. Bank parking lot at Bozarth Avenue and Goerig Street.
Saturday, June 17, will include a fun-filled day packed with activities like the 56th annual frog jump competition and the 19th annual bed races.
A breakfast sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1927 will take place from 7 to 11 a.m. at 434 Davidson Ave. The Woodland Moose Lodge will also host a breakfast buffet that starts at 8 a.m.
The Calvary Kids Zone will open at 9 a.m. and will run until 2 p.m. at Park Street and Davidson Avenue. Four separate events will begin at 10 a.m. They include the Lelooska Tent Art and Display located at Park and Goerig streets and Bozarth Avenue. The Saturday Market will be located at the U.S. Bank parking lot. Kielbasa sausage and corn on the cob will once again be offered at the Woodland Moose Lodge and the Library Friends book sale will take place again on Saturday.
The carnival at Horseshoe Lake field will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday and runs until 10 p.m. Also at 11 a.m., there will be a parade, which follows the route of Fifth Street and Davidson Avenue to Goerig Street to the middle school.
At noon on Saturday, the firemen’s barbecue will take place at the Horseshoe Lake Park gazebo. That will be followed by a military vehicles collectors show at Horseshoe Lake Park, which runs from 12:30 to 3 p.m.
From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, will be the 56th annual frog jump event at the gazebo at Horseshoe Lake Park.
“Fifty-six years ago, Walt Hansen Sr. started the frog jump and it’s been an annual event ever since,” Bellisle said. “They give awards for biggest and smallest, biggest jump, the ugliest and more.”
From 2 to 3 p.m. a groundbreaking event for the future library will take place at the southwest corner of Goerig Street and Lakeshore Drive. There will be a cash-only beer garden at Horseshoe Lake Park next to the red structure from 2 to 10 p.m.
The Penny Scramble will start at 3 p.m. on Saturday in front of the old fire station across from Hoffman Plaza, which will be followed by the firemen’s muster on Goerig Street at 3:30 p.m.
The 19th annual bed races will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday. They will take place at the Davidson Avenue sign at the Hoffman Plaza stage.
In downtown, there will be a special interest car cruise-in sponsored by the Columbia River Camaro Club from 7 to 8 p.m. on Saturday. The day will conclude with live music from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Hoffman Plaza.
On Sunday, the annual celebration will wind down with an all-day car show downtown and the Saturday market, which starts at 10 a.m. in the U.S. Bank parking lot.
At the Woodland Moose Lodge, a breakfast buffet will be served from 8 to 11 a.m. with kielbasa sausage and corn on the cob starting at 10 a.m.
From 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., hot dogs and hamburgers will be served at the VFW Post 1927 at 434 Davidson Ave.
From noon to 5 p.m., the carnival will run at Horseshoe Lake field.
Awards for the car show will be handed out at 2:30 p.m. with a raffle drawing at 3 p.m. on the Hoffman Plaza main stage.
