Woodland School District has hired its first school resource officer, and he's already solved a theft at a school.

When a student reported a bike stolen from a rack, Officer Roberto Cuneta used school camera footage to recover the bike, according to a notice from the school district.

Cuneta said the bike was reported stolen the morning of Oct. 1 at Woodland Middle School.

The student witnessed the theft, the school district reports.

The thief was a local young man, Cuneta told The Daily News, and the victim's family chose not to pursue criminal prosecution once the bike was found.

"The girl was really upset about having her bike stolen," Cuneta said, "and it was very rewarding to be able to bring it back and make her feel better."

He previously worked in Ridgefield and with Native American tribes, and joined the Woodland Police Department in January.

A school district representative said he is paid through the city of Woodland, through an agreement with the city and the police guild.

Cuneta also has a 7-year-old son.

He is committed to building positive connections between students and the police, the press release states.

That is also one of the goals of school resource officers, the notice continues, including ensuring safety for students and staff.

He plans to rotate time at all district schools.
