A teenager died in a single vehicle collision north of Battle Ground on Tuesday night after the vehicle the boy was in went off the roadway, struck a large tree and caught fire.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Nov. 2, Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputies, fire and emergency medical service personnel were dispatched to the collision near Northeast 319th Street and Northeast 152nd Avenue, stated a news release.

While first responders were enroute, the 911 caller stated the vehicle, a 2005 Nissan Frontier pickup, caught fire while the three people were still inside.

A witness was able to help extricate two of the three occupants before first responders arrived.

The fire department arrived to a fully engulfed vehicle and worked to extinguish the fire, but the passenger in the front seat was located dead inside the vehicle.

Statements from the surviving occupants and scene evidence show a 16-year-old boy was traveling south on Northeast 152nd Avenue at a high rate of speed, stated the release.

The vehicle traveled off the east side of the roadway, striking and shearing a power pole. The vehicle then continued off of the roadway and struck a large oak tree.

One passenger involved in the collision was 15-years-old, while the boy who was pronounced dead, was close to that same age, stated the release.

The driver and surviving passenger were transported to area hospitals. Their conditions were not known, stated the release.

Detectives worked until almost 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3 to investigate the scene, while the public utility district worked to restore power to affected residents.

The CCSO Traffic Unit responded to investigate the crash. While the investigation is ongoing, “it is evident that excessive speed is a contributing factor in the collision,” stated the release.

The names of the driver and the passengers will not be released because of their ages. The families of the victims have been notified, stated the release.
