Rummage sale to help fund Washington, D.C. trip for Firm Foundation Christian School students

The Firm Foundation Christian School in Battle Ground will host its annual rummage sale from July 21 to July 23 to fundraise for the eighth graders’ trip to Washington, D.C. next year.

This is the first time co-coordinator and parent Danielle Olson will run the sale. Olson said people can bring donations for the sale to the school starting on Monday, July 18.

“We’re going to have clothing, electronics, toys, books,” Olson said. “It’s just a large rummage sale and the school used to do it before COVID. They would do it annually to support the eighth graders going on the Washington, D.C. trip.”

The kids will spend seven nights on the trip. They plan to go to the Jamestown settlement in Virginia, Mount Vernon, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Museum of the Bible, the Smithsonian, and will also possibly tour the White House.

Olson said past rummage sales were deemed successful, but the school hasn’t held one in two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re anticipating getting a lot of traffic this year, a lot of items donated. We’re hoping to break our record (of $15,000),” Olson said.

She noted some of the kids are fundraising for the trip on their own. Her son, Ryder, has raised $310 mowing lawns.

“It’s about 10% of what he needs, but still, he’s learning how to mow lawns,” Olson said with a laugh.

The rummage sale will also feature furniture, but Olson noted they can’t accept cribs or car seats. They also can’t accept CRT or projection TVs.

Olson said clothes are one of the best sellers at the sale, as well as household items, art supplies and tools.

“It’s open to whatever anybody can donate,” she said.

Besides the rummage sale, Olson said there will be other fundraising events for the trip.

“During the school year, we’ll have parent nights out where they can bring their kids to the school and we’ll have the eighth graders, and parent chaperones will be there as well,” she said. “We’ll do movie nights and game nights just so parents can have a night out. We’re hoping to do that at least once a month through February.”

In January, Olson said the school is planning to host a mother and son dinner, and then in February, there will be the father-daughter dinner.

“We don’t have the themes decided for those yet, but those are planned,” she said.

Each student needs to raise $3,000 for their trip to Washington, D.C. That will cover everything from airfare to hotels, as well as the tickets to get into the various locations they plan to visit, Olson said.

“It’s an all-inclusive price,” she said.

The Washington, D.C. trip is scheduled for March of 2023.

The rummage sale will be held at Firm Foundation Christian School, 1919 SW 25th Way, Battle Ground. The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 21 and July 22, as well as from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on July 23.
