River HomeLink students recently surpassed a 1 million-word reading milestone during the school year as part of a classroom literacy challenge.
English teacher Ryan Anderson started the challenge by asking students to read for 20 minutes each day. Students who maintained the routine reached the milestone by mid-March, according to a Battle Ground Public Schools news release
Anderson used the challenge to highlight the importance of strong reading skills and how the habit can boost lifetime earning potential by nearly $1 million.
“If there’s one thing you [parents] can help with, it’s developing a lifelong reader,” he said in the news release. “Research shows that’s the best thing we can do for students and their academic performance.”
