Battle Ground bronze sculptor Jim Demetro will have a new sculpture installed on Main Street in front of the Battle Ground Healing Arts Natural Health Center.

The life-size cast bronze, “Mother’s Touch,’’ depicts a Native American mother, child and baby in a nurturing pose.

Demetro has over 50 public art works nationally and internationally. There are seven in the Battle Ground Gardner Center, the most famous of which are the Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe statues in front of the Battle Ground Cinemas.

Other artwork in the area include the Captain George Vancouver statue in downtown Vancouver at the Saturday market, as well as the statues in Esther Short Park.

Demetro, a former engineer, has been a bronze sculptor for over 20 years. He sculpts in clay in the studio in his home that he and his wife Eva built near Battle Ground Lake where they raised twin girls, Christina and Alexandra.

Christina Demetro, also an artist, helped her father sculpt many of his life-sized pieces over the years.

Alexandra Demetro is naturally excited to be acquiring the latest sculpture in front of her clinic. She is a naturopathic doctor and a licensed midwife. Along with Jill Stansbury, who founded the Battle Ground Healing Arts Natural Health Center, and Diana Davidson, founder of the Natural Goods Store (housing physician-grade, nutritional and herbal supplements), Alexandra Demetro is committed to helping people with their natural healthcare needs. Demetro has delivered many babies in their homes in the region and enjoys providing natural, preventative medicine for the whole family.

“My father’s sculpture honors the historical roots of our area, as it depicts a scene that was probably common 200 years ago, where women carried babies on their backs and washed their children in the river,’’ Alexandra Demetro said.

Battle Ground Healing Arts Natural Health Center is located at 408 E. Main St., Battle Ground. Staff and the Demetro family invites the public to the Open House on Sat., Oct. 25, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Alexandra Demetro will be making free green smoothies for sampling. The sculpture unveiling will be at noon. The center can be reached by phone at (360) 687-0800.
