Letter to the editor: Their decision leaves particular citizens without a voice

Posted

On Dec. 16, 1773, the Sons of Liberty boarded three British ships in the Boston Harbor.  They dumped 342 crates of tea overboard. This historical act shows the lengths Americans are willing to go to speak out about their rights.  In this case, they were protesting taxation without representation under the British Monarchy.

Today in 2022, Clark County citizens living in the new District 5 are being targeted and denied representation on the Clark County Council.  Even though every cent of their property taxes must be paid, they are left without a representative.  District 5 citizens are denied a voice and the power to vote on important issues, like adequate housing and buildable land.

It’s important to note, District 5 is home to the largest population of rural citizens. Councilors Julie Olson and Temple Lentz refused to timely schedule the immediate work needed to replace the outgoing District 5 representative.  It appears they have intentionally suspended this responsibility. This harms the democratic process for these taxpayers.  Their decision leaves particular citizens without a voice and a vote, on the Clark County Board of Councilors.

The needless action of the two councilors is unacceptable.  Everyone should demand immediate relief and restoration of democratic representation for the citizens of District 5.  The county legislative body acts for all the people of Clark County.  Currently, there is no one to advance the interests of the good citizens of that district. The membership of Clark County Citizens United, Inc. urge these councilors to quickly restore the rightful representation to the citizens of District 5.
