The proposition to open city council meetings with a prayer is insulting and alienating to anyone not of the Christian faith. With this, Battle Ground is closing its ranks on those not holding a Christian belief system, of which there are countless variations. Only one of our city council members had the courage to stand in opposition to this, thank you, Mr. McCoy.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the only drive in our community towards a Christian Nationalist city. The fact that Cameron Spiller and his companies have purchased more than 30 properties in Battle Ground over the past six years should be alarming. Just look to Moscow, ID, as a blueprint and stark warning. This is too heavy a price to pay for a community revitalization.
They are conveniently omitting that we, the USA, were not meant to be a Christian nation. This omission lies in direct opposition to our founding fathers and their documented beliefs about the country regarding religion and the Constitution they helped create.
But hey, don’t take my word for it…
“As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion…”
-John Adams
“The experience of the United States is a happy disproof of the error so long rooted in the unenlightened minds of well-meaning Christians, as well as the corrupt hearts of persecuting usurpers, that without a legal incorporation of religious and civil polity. A mutual independence is found most friendly to practical religion, to social harmony, and to political prosperity.”
-James Madison
“…let us reflect that [the world] is inhabited by a thousand millions of people. That these profess probably a thousand different systems of religion. That ours is but one of a thousand “
“The constitutional freedom of religion [is] the most inalienable and sacred of all human rights “
-Thomas Jefferson
Simon Turner
