Letter to the editor: Please don’t give up on what has made this country the greatest

Are political leaders trying to change our nation?

Despite all the blood that has been shed for generations to defend the liberty enshrined in our Constitution, many of those occupying the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of our national government today pay no homage to the essential obligations inherent in that historic document. Some have outright contempt for rule of law, and utter disregard for their sworn oaths “to support and defend” our Constitution.

The contempt some hold for liberty has rarely been more manifest than in the current administration of Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and their socialist Democrat Party cadres, who are ever advancing the power of the state over “we, the people.” This statement really crosses over to all political parties, not just Democrats. But such disregard does not alter the fundamental and unalienable rights of mankind enumerated in our Declaration of Independence and codified in our Constitution.

I fall back on the old statement “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it is a phrase that means if something is functioning properly, it’s probably best to just leave it alone and not make any changes that could potentially break it. Yes, old glory needs a constant tuning, but please leaders, don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Folks, we are living in a time when we’re being forced — more and more every year — to choose between courage or compromise.

On March 30, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation in which he said of Americans, “We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth, and power, as no nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.”

Please don’t give up on what has made this country the greatest country ever. God Bless America.
