Letter to the editor: Leaving the world a better place, one bag of litter at a time

Posted

I volunteer for the Adopt A Highway program for Battle Ground Community United Methodist Church.

Saturday, three of us picked up 15 bags of litter. When I first started volunteering, we would pick up a bag of litter every 10 feet. Over the years, we have made a difference.

Part of the reason I do this is because I believe God wanted us to be caretakers of the world, not to have domination over it. To me, it is a sign of disrespect to pollute our home.

The number of one-shot liquor bottles and other alcoholic bottles we have picked up is concerning. I have also picked up used needles along the road. I would hope that people would have more respect for themselves than to drink and drive and use needles and throw the bottles and needles out the window for volunteers to pick up.

Sometimes, I have a lot of volunteers. Sometimes, I don’t. I welcome all volunteers. In my own small way, I want to leave this world a better place than the one I was born into.

I hope to accomplish that by picking up one bag of litter at a time.
