Our BGSD Superintendent & School Board have been put in a very daunting, stressful, and unimaginable position. After 4 levy failures, they are now tasked with making $20 million in cuts. OUCH!
The thought came to me that they are in a similar situation to that of mothers and fathers (and others) who are facing these difficult times. As a parent, I want my children to be happy, healthy, have fun, and enjoy life, but ultimately, I want them to become functioning, responsible, and respectful adults. During tough financial times, one may face questions such as: Do I feed them candy so they are happy, or feed them nutritious food so they are healthy? Do I spend money on going to the beach so they are happy, or pay the electric bill so they stay warm?
Do I buy $60 worth of pizza for one night, or spend the $60 towards this week's groceries. We all want our kids to be happy & have fun. However, we know the BASICS come first.
I want to ask the BGSD to please consider funding the basic classes (reading, writing, math, history, science, finance, health) first, with small class sizes, BEFORE funding athletics, extracurriculars, AP, Aspire, etc.
Our children need a basic education, and they need you, BGSD Superintendent and Board, to show them that funds will be spent on the most critical needs during tough times and not fun. We will all get through this and come out stronger, more confident, and successful.
