Letter to the editor: Democrats, moderates must  unite behind Gluesenkamp Perez

Posted

In one decision, the Supreme Court has taken away millions of Americans’ freedom of choice, aided and abetted by the Republicans who appointed them. The decision is tragic. But nothing is so bad that it can’t get worse — and if Congress falls into Republican hands once again, it will indeed get worse.

Democrats and moderates across Washington’s Third District must unite behind Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. She is the only candidate in our upcoming Congressional election who supports a childbearing person’s right to bodily autonomy.

I know people in this area have supported Jaime Herrera Beutler in the past because she is a “moderate.” That may be the case on some economic issues, but it is certainly not the case when it comes to freedom of choice. Herrera Beutler has a perfect score from Susan B. Anthony List, an extremist organization that actively seeks to disempower childbearing people. Yes, she voted for President Joe Biden’s budget, but not any of his critical priorities, so I would not call her a moderate. There is no such thing as a moderate extremist and the lesser of two (or three) evils is still evil.

The other Republican candidate is no better. He is actually far worse. Gov. Jay Inslee himself has warned voters not to choose Joe Kent because he propagated Trump’s “big lie” about the 2020 election. He continues to peddle lies, despite the fact that even Trump-appointed government officials have confirmed what we all know is true: Joe Biden won fair and square because Americans loved his unifying message.

If Joe Kent is elected, he will try to restrict voting for millions of Americans under the guise of “securing our elections.” The only thing he wants to “secure” is a Republican majority, with everyone else shut out from the polls.

There is one candidate and one candidate only who supports women, democracy, and “liberty and justice for all.” It’s Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. This election, the stakes are nothing more than the lives of hundreds of millions of childbearing people. We must unite behind Marie.
