Letter to the editor: Capitalism is great, but sometimes flawed

At theamericanconservative.com, columnist Rosemary Gibson writes in a commentary titled “China’s Dangerous Chokehold on our Medicines” that 80 percent of the core components that go into our generic medicines are manufactured in China.

If China were to stop shipping these ingredients, our store shelves would empty within months. In the late 1980s, these components were manufactured in the United States. Over the next 30 years, capitalists decided they could make more money having these components manufactured in China.

The federal government in 2001 bought 20 million doses of the antibiotic doxycycline from China following the 2001 anthrax attack.

What if China was the anthrax attacker? It’s bad enough we continue shipping our jobs overseas, but we’re also losing our ability to protect ourselves. This might be a time when all of us, no matter our political leanings, consider what is best in the interest of Main Street instead of Wall Street.

While capitalism is great stuff, it is also sometimes flawed. As E. Warren suggested, if we’re not at the table, we’re probably on the menu.
