Letter to the editor: Cancer research must continue even amid pandemic

Posted

While the country continues dealing with this pandemic, we can’t forget about research and medical investments into other diseases like cancer. That’s why I recently took part in a virtual event where I met Washington’s members of Congress as an American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network volunteer. We asked our lawmakers to support issues to help make cancer a national priority.

I made it clear that Washington residents are counting on our lawmakers to increase funding for cancer research and prevention. This year, more than 42,000 Washingtonians will be diagnosed with cancer while about 13,130 residents will die from the disease. However, we are at a point where more people are surviving cancer than ever before, thanks to advances in research. We must keep this momentum going.

That’s the message I shared with Sen. Patty Murray, when I asked her to support a federal increase for cancer research funding. We need a strong investment in research in order to continue making progress in our fight against cancer in Washington and across the country.
