La Center marked Arbor Day on Wednesday by planting a tree at Heritage Park, a step city leaders hope will help earn Tree City USA recognition from the national Arbor Day Foundation.
Mayor Tom Strobehn and Public Works Director Tracy Coleman joined in the effort near the basketball court, reinforcing the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
“Here in La Center, we are fortunate to be surrounded by trees that enhance our landscapes, improve our air quality and provide habitats for wildlife. Their presence is reflected in the clean air we breathe and the vibrant environment we enjoy every day,” Strobehn said.
The designation, which the city is actively pursuing, requires an Arbor Day observance and a formal proclamation, which was read during a city council meeting following the tree planting.
Strobehn said the community’s respect for old-growth trees and a growing interest in preservation are strong signs that La Center is ready for that recognition next year.
Arbor Day is observed nationally on the last Friday of April.
“To be recognized for the environment we do protect and try to replenish — that’s an important part of our legacy here in La Center,” Strobehn said.
