Historic Trust Speaker Series to explore fashion, digital life and print

The Historic Trust will host a three-part speaker series this fall exploring the history of women’s undergarments, the challenges of the digital age and the enduring appeal of print.

The Fall Speakers Series, presented by University Village, begins Sept. 24 with “Hidden Layers: Women’s Undergarments and How They’ve Shaped Ladies’ Liberties,” presented by theatrical costume designer Diane Johnston. The talk will explore how changes in women’s undergarments have reflected broader shifts in comfort, freedom and social expectations.

On Oct. 15, journalist and media educator T. Andrew Wahl will present “Doomscrolling Detox: Finding Your Balance in the Digital Age.” The talk will examine how the internet and newer technologies have changed the way people consume information and offer tips for developing a healthier relationship with digital media.

The series concludes Nov. 12 with “Permanent Ink: Why We Still Love Print in the Digital Age,” presented by University of Washington professor Geoffrey Turnovsky. The talk will examine how technologies from the printing press to modern digital tools have shaped the way people record, access and consume information.

All three talks will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays at the Red Cross Building, 605 Barnes St., Vancouver. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The events are free and open to the public, but reservations are required due to limited seating, according to a press release from The Historic Trust.

Reservations open about one month before each presentation. Visit The Historic Trust’s events calendar at thehistorictrust.org/calendar or call 360-992-1800 for more information.
