Kindergarten classrooms at Hockinson Heights Elementary School will be stocked with decodable books following a $10,200 Ellison Education Grant.
The books will help students practice reading and recognizing letter-sound patterns. Each kindergarten teacher will receive a boxed set of nonfiction decodable books, while the kindergarten team will share an additional collection of fiction titles, according to a Hockinson School District news release.
Decodable books use words that beginning readers can sound out using basic phonics skills, giving students practice reading independently as they build foundational literacy skills.
The Ellison Education Grants support Washington public school teachers who develop academic-enrichment curricula or pursue professional-learning opportunities. Since 2017, the Ellison Foundation has awarded 163 grants totaling more than $800,000 to public-school educators in Washington.
