Commentary: Balancing Academic Growth and Student Experience in Ridgefield Schools

Posted

Ridgefield School District has heard concerns regarding changes to our elementary schedules and program of study. I want our community to know this clearly: we understand these concerns, we value the perspectives being shared, and we care deeply about the same things our families care about — providing students with a meaningful, well-rounded educational experience.

Programs like art, music, physical education, and library are important parts of a child’s school day. They foster creativity, movement, engagement, and connection. They help students discover passions and build confidence. Those opportunities matter to our students, our families, and our staff, and they matter to us as a district.

Ridgefield School District continues to make significant investments in these experiences from Kindergarten through 12th grade because we believe strongly in educating the whole child. That is why, even in a challenging financial and operational environment, we decided to preserve these programs rather than eliminate them entirely.

At the same time, we have a responsibility to respond to student performance data, support strong academic outcomes, and ensure responsible stewardship of public resources. The schedule changes were developed collaboratively by elementary principals, district Cabinet leaders, and labor leaders, in alignment with our labor contracts, following months of discussion on instructional priorities, staffing realities, student needs, and long-term sustainability.

These decisions were not made lightly.

Over the past year, we have consistently heard from families and community members who want to see stronger academic outcomes for students. We have also heard concerns about student behavioral challenges, available instructional time, teacher workload, and how we best support students academically while maintaining engaging school experiences. Balancing all of those perspectives is complex, especially in a time when school districts across Washington continue to face financial strain and increasing expectations.

We have amazing student artists, musicians, thespians, and athletes in Ridgefield - we believe our children deserve the opportunity to also be amazing readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists. This decision was not about deprioritizing the arts and physical movement - it was about supporting our children where they are struggling the most.

We also recognize concerns regarding trust, transparency, and opportunities for community involvement in the process. Those concerns deserve acknowledgment.

Since I became superintendent, the district has worked intentionally to expand opportunities for engagement and dialogue. Through community forums, surveys, work groups, meet-and-greet events, public comment opportunities, strategic planning sessions, and direct conversations with families, we have increased opportunities for constituents to share feedback and ask questions. We remain committed to continuing that work.

At the same time, effective leadership requires balancing broad participation with the ability to act responsibly and decisively. In organizations as complex as public school systems, not every operational decision can be made by large committees without risking stalled progress or delayed support for students. Our responsibility is to listen carefully, weigh differing viewpoints thoughtfully, honor labor agreements and established Board policies, and make decisions we believe best serve students overall.

We are also committed to accountability and transparency. While not every decision will involve universal agreement or participation, our community deserves to understand why decisions were made and how we will measure success. We will continue monitoring student experiences and learning outcomes carefully. If adjustments are needed, we will make them. Our focus remains where it has always been: supporting students and strengthening outcomes. Together, we can cultivate learning and belonging for every student, every day, building a strong community, today and for the future.
