Clark County’s recent COVID-19 case rate drops, 12 deaths reported

Clark County’s latest rate of recent COVID-19 cases experienced a larger decrease than the prior week, though a dozen deaths from the disease were recorded.

Clark County Public Health’s June 9 report showed 157.9 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population over seven days, a drop from the 217.3 per 100,000 reported the prior week.

The case rate previously increased for seven weeks straight before it started to decline last week, though it still remains as high as it was in February. The county’s average was lower than the rate statewide, which is 263.1 per 100,000 in the past 14 days.

Recent case rates lag behind the most recent counts of cases. The health department’s most recent case rate was based on activity from May 24 to May 30.

The health department reported 905 new cases between June 2 and June 9, more than the 754 reported between May 26 and June 2. In total, there have been 95,036 confirmed and probable cases in Clark County since the outbreak began.

Clark County Public Health’s June 9 report included 11 additional confirmed COVID-19 deaths and one suspected to be due to the disease. The prior week there were two confirmed and three suspected deaths.



The deaths include three men older than 80, a man in his 70s, two men in their 60s, a woman older than 80, a woman in her 70s, two women in their 60s and one woman in her 50s. The suspected death was a man in his 40s.

The deaths put Clark County’s total at 827, which includes 725 confirmed and 102 suspected to be due to COVID-19.

The number of COVID-19 patients occupying hospital beds in Clark County experienced a large increase. As of June 9, 26.7% of beds had either patients with confirmed COVID-19 or patients awaiting test results, up from the 9% reported the week prior. The number of intensive care unit (ICU) beds occupied by COVID-19 patients decreased to 9.4%, down from the 11.3% reported on June 2.

New COVID-19 hospital admissions saw an increase in the latest data. In its June 9 report, the health department reported 10 admissions per 100,000 population in the past seven days, up from 8 admissions per 100,000 population reported June 2.

Though more beds had COVID-19 patients, total hospital bed occupancy in the county dropped overall but rose for ICU beds. The health department reported 96.9% of hospital beds and 98.1% of ICU beds were occupied in the county, compared to 98% of all beds and 96.2% of ICU beds on June 2.

Clark County’s statewide share of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths stayed about the same as of June 9 compared to the prior week. The Washington State Department of Health reported the county had about 5.9% of cases and 6.3% of deaths.
