The Christmas Ships Parade, the longest continuously operating illuminated boat parade in the United States, will return to the Columbia and Willamette rivers for its 71st season this December.
More than 70 decorated boats will participate in the annual volunteer-run tradition, which offers free viewing opportunities over 15 nights. Scheduled appearances include Woodland, Camas, North Portland Harbor, St. Helens, Columbia City, the Multnomah Channel, Lake Oswego and surrounding areas, a Christmas Ships news release stated. A full schedule and viewing suggestions are available at christmasships.org.
Christmas Ships will also host two meet-and-greet open docks from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, and 2 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Riverplace Marina, 0315 S.W. Montgomery St., Portland. Attendees are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys for a holiday toy drive benefiting children in need.
Founded in 1954, Christmas Ships is a volunteer-led nonprofit and an Oregon Heritage Tradition. Admission is free, and the parade can be viewed from shoreline parks, businesses and public spaces in both Oregon and Washington.
