Cheerleading gym to hold Nerf War event

Cosmic Cheer will hold its first Nerf Wars for kids 6 to 12 years old on Saturday, Jan. 22. People from throughout Clark County are welcome to register.

Owner Jami Richer said the staff at the gym host a special event every month that the community can join. The Nerf Wars will be the Vancouver-based gym’s big event for January.

Richer said kids need to bring their own Nerf guns, or a similar brand, and Cosmic Cheer will provide the ammo and eye protection. Participants will be able to train with their guns in different sections of the gym and will be able to participate in challenges, which include shooting a ping pong ball off of a bottle or target practice.

Afterwards, the actual Nerf War will start with a capture the flag game. Players will need to capture bean bags on the other team’s side and bring it back to their territory. If a player gets hit with a Nerf bullet, then they are out.

“We will have around eight kids to a team and then we’ll do a tournament-style event at the end,” Richer said.

The capacity for the event is 30 children. Richer said people from North Clark County are encouraged to sign up, as many clients of hers are from places like Battle Ground and Woodland.

“When I advertise events, right before the event happens, that’s when everybody signs up,” she said.

Since the gym opened in July 2021, it has hosted an event with Santa and another event that featured characters from the Disney film “Frozen.”

More events are already being organized.

“We will be having a Paw Patrol camp coming up within the next couple months,” Richer said.

The event will feature different stations where participants can practice tumbling skills. There will also be Paw Patrol related crafts and games. While the camp is set for the end of February, Richer said an exact date hasn’t yet been pinpointed.

“Then we’re going to do an event called Tie Dye and Tumble where the kids will come and get to tie dye a T-shirt and do some tumbling activities,” Richer said.

The gym also plans to host a parent’s night out for Valentine’s Day. They plan to team up with restaurants so parents can get coupons and head out for a date night while their children are watched.

Although the gym holds a lot of different events for families, Cosmic Cheer focuses on cheerleading first and foremost.

“We are a competitive cheerleading gym,” said Richer. “We take athletes and teach them the fundamental basics of competitive cheerleading. That means they learn cheer motions, cheer stunts (and) cheer tumbling.”

The Nerf Wars will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 22. To register, go to cosmiccheer.com. For more information, call 360-448-5699. Cosmic Cheer is located at 7500 NE 16th Ave. #2-D, Vancouver.
